Maths Tutoring in Dubai:Learning Pathways

Maths Tutoring in Dubai : Learning pathways

Majority of parents and students are on the lookout for Maths tutors in Dubai as exams approach. They seldom realise that tutoring is a long term solution to a very complex learning process "Maths Learning".

There are umpteen examples of how good tutors have made a big difference to the results. These are certain instances that lead us to think why some students benefit out of tutoring. But the lingering question that confronts many parents is "I spent a fortune on tutoring on my child....But he failed/ secured no where near
what we expected?" This is the majority opinion among parents here in Dubai.

Most of them are spending their life savings to educate their kids so that "IVY League" dreams come
true. My experience as a tutor (last 10 years) led me to analyse hundreds of students as they learn maths & physics. An interesting pattern that I observed among majority of students is that they learn by examples. What the teachers cannot explain in the classrooms can be achieved in a much shorter time in a tutoring session by devising a clear methodology of understanding a student's learning pathways. I do not intend to publish a research paper!!

A very simple solution to a complex problem in maths makes me wonder sometimes, how easy it is to teach/ tutor a student whose learning pathways have been mapped.By mappping, I mean his approach towards a particular concept in Maths/ Science. There are no special techniques to map these pathways. Certain key aspects are notedwhen a student is learning. These could be attention span, thinking process, handwriting analysis...and so on. Only with experience and open ended approach,a tutor can determine these complex set of interlinkings within a student's academic make up.

A careful examination of students' approach to math topics led me to establish a predictive model that attempts to put students in "acheivement sets". My tutoring is always in small groups and NEVER in individual (one-to-one) format. I strongly believe that a student learns better when he's in a small group. Interaction leads to higher performance and increased level of understanding among students. This is true with Maths & science subjects. It may differ for other subjects.

Dubai's unique lifestyle and its surroundings also shapes a student's academic performance. Hence,it is not fair to compare a student in dubai with his counterpart in the UK / Singapore. They both have different lifestyles and consequently different approaches to learning the same concept. Every concept in Math / science needs to be imbibed with practical / day to day examples. It works wonders with the students and makes learning process extremely interesting and lively.

Another important aspect that determines the success of tutoring in enhancing a student's perfromance is the time for which the tuitions are imparted. Generally, most parents hire tutors 2 months before the exams. This may not be advisable. The parents must hire a licensed tutor who will work out a reasonable fee structure
that suits everyone and thus give the tutoring over a larger span of time. Many tutors in Dubai charge premium prices which hampers this noble profession. It creates a "Monster" image of all tutors in the minds of parents and students. The unresonable fees that some tutors charge have done more damage to this professionthan the quality of tutoring!!

The quality of Maths / Science tutoring in Dubai is another aspect which needs to be thought over. A careful examination of tutor's background, his license, experience and past references may be a good starting point. It is important to visit the tutor's premises/ office (licensed) before signing up. Many tutorsclaim that they are licensed and that there is no license required for tutoring etc...Don't take a chance. Ask him / her a simple question: Where is your office? We want to visit you before we sign up. This way we can ensure that every Tom, Dick and Harry doesn't fool a parent and a student's career by posing as a tutor.

Good Tutor in Dubai: watch out!

How to Spot a Good Tutor in Dubai?

Tutoring is the need of the hour in Dubai given the pathetic teaching standards in the schools in Dubai. Students and parents franctically search for tutors online and offline. The search intensifies as the exams approach. The most important aspect that a parent/student has to keep in mind regarding tutoring is that it is a supplemental education support. Tutoring should not be considered as an alternative to school teaching.

Fundamentally, tutoring is a good academic support for a student who wants to excel in academics. But there are a few things one should note before hiring a tutor. As per KHDA rules (Knowledge & Human Development Authority) which is the nodal regulator for education sector in Dubai, private tutoring is ILLEGAL. They have point. There have been many instances when so called private tutors have exploited the parents and students by ripping them off by overcharging.

There are security concerns especially when you hire a tutor who's not known to you, not on your sponsorship etc. This is violation of immigration rules.Dubai Police have recently suggested parents NOT to hire private tutors in their homes. Many cases of abuse have taken place, robbery and other security concerns have prompted authorities to issue stern warnings.

The other aspect and which is the most important issue, is that of the quality / qualifications of the tutor.

A few tips to spot a good tutor are:

1) Check his license. Every tutor must be licensed. He/She must be registered with Dubai Knowledge Village and must have a tutoring license. To get a license from Dubai Knowledge Village, the tutor has to submit all his credentials and this way his qualifications are checked.

2) Visit the tutor's office / center to cross check if the information provided by him is true

3) Check his past experience in teaching students by way of references or otherwise

4) Preferably, send your child to a safe and secure place such as Knowledge Village. Tutors are licensed in this place and that can take care of points 1 to 3 mentioned above.

5) Try to accomodate your child in small groups. NEVER allow INDIVIDUAL Lessons.

Safety comes first for you as a parent whose most precious gift is your child.

IGCSE Curriculum: Dubai's Indian Parents please note

The IGCSE education: how can it help your child? Rohit Tikmany | January 31, 2005

The IGSCE board

Today, parents have a plethora of educational boards from which to choose, to enroll their child/ren. It is not just the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) or ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education). Get Ahead presents?a series of articles on the educational boards gaining popularity today.?This is a look at the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) board.

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a globally recognised qualification, taken at the Class 10 level, similar to the Class 10 examinations?of the CBSE and ICSE or the middle years Programme of the IB.

IGCSE,?formed in 1988, is a comprehensive two-year programme, spread over Class 9?and?10,?and leads to the final examinations offered every year in May and November.

Don't miss! The International Baccalaureate education

IGCSE assessment is conducted by two UK assessment bodies: Edexcel (also known as London Examinations) and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) (see below).

A student who has passed IGCSE is eligible for any +2 level qualification, like Class 12?CBSE/ ICSE or any international pre-university programme, like?the IB Diploma, Advanced Placement Diploma (US), and A/AS Level & AICE (UK).

How does the IGCSE compare to other programmes like CBSE, ICSE or the Middle Years Programme of the IB?

Like other modern programmes, IGCSE offers a wider range of subjects and encourages high academic standards through a practical approach to teaching and learning. Assessment is not limited to conventional written papers and they consist of a variety of tests e.g. oral and listening tests.

The assessment is aimed at a wide ability range of students, with an eight-point grading scale, from A+ to G, with A+ being the highest.

IGCSE is a balanced curriculum and a flexible course of study.

Most subjects offer a choice between core curriculum and extended curriculum.?

This gives students of all ability levels the freedom to choose subjects that are right for them and, thereby, the opportunity to score good grades.

The core curriculum is an overview of the subject and is suitable for students who are expected to achieve grades C to G.

www.dubai-tuitions.com ; www.dubai-math-tutor.blogspot.com ; www.gorestutoring.com ; www.gorestutoringdubai.webs.com

The extended curriculum is, sort of, a specialisation in that subject. It is more challenging and designed for students who are expected to achieve grades A+ to C.

While the syllabi and curricula of both IB MYP and IGCSE have an international outlook, IGCSE appears to be slightly better, in that it is tailored for a more multi-cultural and more multi-lingual audience.

Does the IGCSE start only in Class 9? What about the primary years? Can a student do IGCSE after completing his/ her earlier schooling through a different board?

Currently, IGCSE is a two-year programme starting at the Class 9 level. A student who has done his/?her early schooling from any other board can join the IGCSE programme at the Class 9 level.

CIE?has declared the launch of its new Cambridge International Primary Programme in June this year.

The introduction of this programme means students will be able to study the IGCSE from age?five through age18.

What are the subjects in the IGCSE curriculum?

There are five Subject Groups in IGCSE with several subjects to choose from, in each group:

Group 1: ?Languages (First Language, Second Language, Foreign Language, etc)
Group 2: ?Humanities and Social Sciences (Geography, English Literature, History, etc)
Group 3: ?Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc)
Group 4: ?Mathematics (Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, etc)
Group 5: ?Creative, Technical & Vocational (Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Music, etc)

For each subject, the certificate merely indicates the grades scored, and not pass or fail.

Five scores of 'C' or higher indicates a students readiness to pursue +2 level qualifications, like the Class?12 CBSE, IB Diploma, Advanced Placement Diploma (US), etc.

What is the International Certificate of Education (ICE) that is awarded to some IGCSE students?

The ICE is more prestigious than the standard IGCSE.

Instead of the five papers needed to obtain the IGCSE, if a student attempts and passes seven or more papers, s/he is awarded the ICE.

The seven subjects must be as follows:

Two subjects from the language group
One from each of the other four groups
One more from any of the five groups

What is a Cambridge International Centre? What is an Edexcel Centre or a London Examinations Centre?

Schools that are accredited to Edexcel or CIE for the conduct of the IGCSE programme are known as Edexcel Centres or Cambridge International Centres.

From parents' or students' perspective, there is little difference between the two.

Some schools are accredited to Edexcel and some to CIE. For example, DPS International in Delhi is an Edexcel IGCSE centre, while the Pathways World School in Gurgaon is a CIE IGCSE centre.

Then there are some like Calcutta International School in Kolkata and British School in Delhi, which are centres of both Edexcel and CIE.

More than the assessment body, parents need to think about which school is better for their child.

GCSE,Alevels,Tutoring in Dubai: Short Notes!!

Tension between the Tories and Lib Dems has drastically increased in the last 24 hours. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has very publically and stridently lambasted education secretary, Michael Gove’s plans to scrap the GCSEs and replace them with examinations similar to the 1950s-style O-Levels and CSEs.Don't Worry this year GCSEs would as usual...who cares what happens next year!!!!!!

658,000 students sat GCSE exams this year.

The proportion of students who received a C grade or above has fallen for the first time since the GCSEs were introduced in 1998.

Last year 69.8% of candidates received A*-C grades, compared with 69.4% this year.

Last year 23.2% gained A*s and As, whereas this year the figure dropped to 22.4%.

Grades in English literature have dropped from 78.4% A*-C to 76.3% A*-C.

58.4% of maths grades came in as A*-C.

The percentage of girls getting all A*-C grades was 73.3%, compared to 65.4% of boys.

Even though more boys took individual sciences, girls performed better in physics, chemistry and biology.

Maths remains the most popular subject, and the others in the top ten are: English language, science, English literature, design & technology, religious studies, history, geography and art and design.

Science and Spanish GCSEs were more popular this year, but the fewer students took German and French.

This year’s GCSE results have been particularly dramatic and controversial, with a major uproar surrounding the English results. Teachers and students alike are outraged by the huge shift in grade boundaries, which has meant that many pupils have received grades that are much lower than they expected.

Anger is mainly focused on the fact that students who sat English GCSE exams in January needed 43% to attain a C grade. However, those who sat the exam in May needed to get 53% to get a C. This is an enormous difference, and has left many students who were expecting at least a C grade with a D or below. Overall the percentage of pupils attaining a C grade or above in English dropped by 1.5%. Maths and science grades also fell.

Although boundaries for grades often change, and talk of trying to curb grade inflation has been rife for a while, it is the severity of the exam boards’ actions that has really shocked people. For example, out of the 96,000 students who sat English literature and language with the AQA board, only 2.3% were awarded an A or A* and almost 70% got a D or lower. One head teacher told the Guardian that the marking this year has been “savage and abnormal”.

A Level Results:

Although the overall pass rate has risen to 98% (when A Levels were introduced in 1951 the pass rate was 70% and remained so until 1981) for the first time in twenty years the proportion of top grade results has fallen. Last year 27% of candidates were awarded an A or A*, whereas this year the figure dropped to 26.6%. Although 0.4% doesn’t sound like an awful lot, it is extremely significant after two decades of rising grades.

Another surprising figure was that for the first time since the A* was introduced, boys have outperformed girls. To achieve an A*, candidates need to get over 90% in their paper, so it really is an impressive feat to be awarded an A*. Girls traditionally do better at A Levels than boys, so it will be interesting to see whether the trend continues next year or not. Perhaps 2012 saw a particularly hard working group of male students, or maybe boys are catching up with their female classmates and closing up the gap.

English retained its title as the most popular subject, maths came in second and biology was awarded third place. Maths is gaining strength every year though, with a 3.8% rise on last year and a 45.6% rise since 2007. Maybe it’ll snatch English’s top spot before long.

Learn GCSE Maths the "Indian Way"

Vedic maths comes from the Vedic tradition of India. The Vedas are the most ancient record of human experience and knowledge, passed down orally for generations and written down about 5,000 years ago. Medicine, architecture, astronomy and many other branches of knowledge, including maths, are dealt with in the texts. Perhaps it is not surprising that the country credited with introducing our current number system and the invention of perhaps the most important mathematical symbol, 0, may have more to offer in the field of maths.

At Dubai Tuitions we have successfully integrated the Indian Vedic Maths methods into the GCSE Maths (KS1, KS2 & KS3). The resultsare nothing but amazing!! The students undergo rigorous practice of basic math operations that strengthen not only their numerical skills but aid brain development. Maths learning is known to boost the intellectual capabilities in children.

The Indian Math techniques are powerful tools to enhance numercy concepts (Arithmatic operations) as well as Algebra. The simple and effective methods makes math learning interesting and stimulates the urge to work harder.
